Could it be? A Facebooking Car?

While many ads debuted during the 2011 Super Bowl on Sunday, one of them in particular stuck out to the marketer in me. Chevy Cruze’s Status spot shows a couple on a first date. After the man drops off his date outside her home, he hops into his Chevy Cruze and immediately checks his Facebook news feed. But he doesn’t he pull out his smart phone like the rest of us laypeople. No, this guy is much more James Bond about his Facebooking.

At the press of a button, the man’s car reports Facebook’s latest status updates (including, of course, the post from his new lady friend gushing about their date). The commercial ends with, “The new Chevy Cruze with real-time Facebook status updates… When the good news just can’t wait.”

While we as consumers might have varying opinions regarding the value of this new feature ranging from disgust to elation, the takeaway here is the thought process behind the feature. Social media is all around us and we need to use it to our advantage. As marketers and providers of products and services, we need to constantly consider how our strategies can relate back to our social media-frenzied world. If equine dentists and aircraft maintenance companies are using social media successfully, your company can too.
