This Left A Bad Taste in My Mouth

Is there really such a thing as bad press? The Food Network’s “Barefoot Contessa“, Ina Garten may think so after her highly publicized incident with the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Make-A-Wish contacted Garten about meeting six-year-old Enzo Pareda from Oregon. The little boy suffers from leukemia, and would watch the chef from his hospital bed with his mom. Enzo told the organization it was his dream to meet, and spend the afternoon cooking with the celebrated chef. According to the website, Garten turned down the little boy’s request not once, but twice during a three year period. Both times Garten said she was too busy to meet with the sick child.

The negative backlash for her decision has been incredible, splashed all over the web and even on national news. Garten’s spokesperson says the star tries to help as many groups as possible, but can’t fit everyone in. The little boy’s mom, who’s been blogging about the failed meeting attempts, says her son simply asked “Why doesn’t she want to meet me?”

All the attention has created some good news. Garten is now agreeing to meet little Enzo on the set of her show. Enzo said on his mom’s blog “I still want her as my 1st wish, even if she doesn’t want to meet me.” I’m glad the extra attention is helping a little boy get the day of his dreams.
