Meet the Intern

Our fall intern John H. Wolfe IV began his stint at z2 in the beginning of October and has been dabbling in a little bit of everything each week. He is very excited for the coming months and challenges ahead.

John graduated from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee with a Bachelor of Arts degree focusing on advertising & public relations. His experience has been almost exclusively in the service and hospitality industries, which has enabled him to use that frame of mind to see different perspectives than most. Along with his education, the love John has of helping guests and clients has led him into the advertising industry.

His favorite part of undergrad was creating actual ad campaigns; both commercial and non-profit. The role he felt most comfortable in was account services. “I enjoy being involved in a lot of things at once and trying to prioritize different projects simultaneously,” John says. “Leading brainstorming sessions and guiding the team along the path to completion was the most fulfilling thing for me.” He hopes to be able to fill a similar role at an agency in the near future.

John’s family moved around a lot when he was growing up, so he had to adjust to a lot of different scenarios and people throughout his life. He definitely considers that an advantage now because it forced him to develop very strong interpersonal skills as a result. Currently, John is the only person in his family who lives in Wisconsin. Even as wanderlust tries to take over, he says he is partial to Wisconsin due to the incredible kindness of the people and the strong sports culture.

Speaking of which, if you’re looking for his personal interests, sports are definitely atop the list of favorites. College football, basketball, NFL, MLB, NBA and even a little soccer here and there all garner John’s attention over the course of the year. “Badger and Packer football take priority over everything though,” he says. He also enjoys binging on television series, spending time with his lovely girlfriend, and sampling various bourbons and beers in his free time.

Welcome to z2, John!

Here at z2, she works with clients, designers and account executives as an account coordinator to understand each brand and grasp the day-to-day management of our wonderful accounts.

Describe a “typical day at z2 for you.

I start the day by drinking about 3 to 4 cups of coffee and getting overly hyped about the workday by catching up on emails and reading the latest marketing news.

After that, every day has been different at z2. From sending out ads to publishers to tracking down my new co-workers for materials for a photo shoot to visiting clients. One of the best parts so far is getting to know and work with my new coworkers. It’s amazing to be surrounded by such creativity and passion for what they are doing. It truly inspires me to do more and push myself to be just as creative and passionate about what I am learning to do.

What’s your favorite Wisconsin activity, pastime or place?

Farmers markets, festivals, and flea markets in the summer – WI knows how to take advantage and appreciate the season.

Farmers markets are one of my favorite things to do on a Saturday or Sunday morning. The festivals are always fun whether they are celebrating a culture and/or good food, or just really good music like Mile of Music in Appleton. I am also in love with bringing vintage pieces back to life, so its fairly typical I come back from whatever estate sale or flea market I can find with a large dresser/table/chair or an armful of vintage items.

You’re stranded on a deserted island, what three things would you bring?

1) Water

2) SPF 50 sunscreen

3) Tom Hanks – He has been in enough of these survival movies to have an idea of what to do

Where is one place you’ve always wanted to go and/or where is your favorite place you’ve ever visited?

This answer consistently changes, but currently I would love to travel to central Europe: Budapest, Prague, Vienna, etc.

New Orleans during Jazz Fest is one of my favorite trips so far. We heard music from gospel to jazz to famous artists like Stevie Wonder. We also stayed at an Air BNB hosted by an Australian who had some pretty incredible stories and knew all the best local actives.

 What is your pet peeve?

Celebrity crush.

Ryan Reynolds

If you could pick one superpower, what would it be?

Omnilingualism – It would be amazing to understand and communicate to anyone anywhere in the world.

Who would you want to play you in a movie about your life?

Anne Hathaway

What’s the #1 most played song on your iPod?

I haven’t kept track, but my go to band is usually She and Him.

What is your best z2 memory?

Surprise birthday gathering! (So far) Apparently they do it for everyone, but being new I had no idea it was coming.

What is your favorite quote?

“Do you know what’s better than being cool? Being Happy.” – Taylor Swift.

If you could live in any era, what would it be?

1920’s – I’d have a swinging time! So much glitter and glamour (based on The Great Gatsby)

If you could have dinner with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be?

Emma Watson #HPFan4Life #UN #Heforshe

On Tuesday, Instagram came out with Instagram Stories, a feature suspiciously similar to Snapchat that lets Instagram users share photos and videos that appear in a slideshow format and disappear after 24 hours. Like Snapchat, users are able to type, draw and use emojis on their stories, but unlike Snapchat there are no filters or sponsored stories – yet.

There are a lot of mixed emotions around Instagram Stories. Some are confused at the uncanny resemblance and talking about boycotting Instagram stories, while many are wondering if they should switch solely to Instagram. After all, why have two apps that do the same thing?

One thing is for certain. Instagram saw the potential and performance of Snapchat and wanted in. Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom said, “This is about a format, and how you take it to a network and put your own spin on it.” And Instagram Stories was born.

So, how can you as a brand take advantage? Many companies are shying away from Snapchat because they see it as a social media platform for the younger generation or as an app that takes too much time and may not see an immediate payoff. However, most brands that use Instagram regularly are seeing steady and rapid growth.

Instagram Stories are an easy segue into the live video feature that is popping up everywhere and here to stay. Many companies already have an Instagram audience, so you don’t have to worry about building an entire new audience on Snapchat. And unlike Facebook Live, the stories only last 24 hours and you don’t have to deal with comments or questions. You only have to invest 10 seconds at a time and zero dollars into Instagram Stories and everyone who already follows you on Instagram has access. People love to see the people behind the brand, and Instagram Stories might actually be the perfect #bts platform.

Now, as with any popular social media platform, advertising will eventually come. But for now, share your behind the scenes moments with your #Instafam! And don’t forget to follow z2 on Instagram at z2marketing.

z2 Retreat 2016

Each year our fearless leaders, Deb and Cory, take the whole team on an overnight retreat at Grand Geneva Resort & Spa for fun-filled team-building and team-bonding activities. This year, we had a few surprises.

The morning started off with several team-building exercises and ended with a build-your-own pizza competition. We split into teams to create our own pizzas and come up with a branding plan for our very own pizza businesses. The catch – one person on each team had to be blind-folded while another walked them through picking the ingredients.

After more team-building, brainstorming, competitions and some pool time, the team was told to meet promptly at 5:30 for dinner. We were then surprised with a trolley ride down to the lake where a boat awaited our arrival.

We took the boat around Lake Geneva while enjoying drinks, dinner, dessert and an informative tour of many of the lake properties. The boat ride was the perfect way to end such a beautiful, sunny day.

After the boat ride, we had a nightcap by the bonfire and several z2 team members participated in a little dance-off session. Overall we had an inspiring experience and can’t wait to see what the next year has in store!
